"Sunquake" is the fifty-second episode of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. It first aired on November 24, 2000 on UPN.

Overview[]

Buzz's evil counterpart returns, siding with Gravitina.

Plot[]

The episode starts with Louis serving two of the tech experts working at Compu-Klerm right before Shiv Katall's break-in.

Buzz and Mira spot a base floating in the atmosphere of the sun, with Evil Buzz monitoring them and allowing them entry. Buzz tells Mira to stay alert.

Once inside, Mira spots the stolen items Evil Buzz plundered before he reveals himself. When the two of them threaten to arrest him, Evil Buzz says his “better half” would be displeased. Buzz and Mira suddenly have their weapons destroyed before they are pinned to the ground by an unknown force who is revealed to be Gravitina.

Gravitina reveals she found Evil Buzz while he was floating lost in space. Evil Buzz states she initially mistook him for the good Buzz until seeing otherwise and was more than pleased to find a version of Buzz that was already evil and they started making plans.

Feeling that Buzz had "ruined" his home universe, Evil Buzz decides to return the favor. He reveals the station was positioned so that Gravitina could use her powers to produce devastating sunquakes that would send streaks of molten plasma hurtling around the galaxy.

As the station starts to crumble, Evil Buzz makes his escape while Buzz and Mira rescue Gravitina who begs her lover for help. However, Evil Buzz shows his true colors by abandoning Gravitina when the station starts to come apart, and seemingly falls into the sun. A shocked Buzz tries to look for his counterpart, but Mira implies that he perished.

Afterwards, Gravitina is arrested, but not before making one last flirtation with Buzz. She states that she is looking forward to seeing him at her parole meeting.

At the end, Buzz has his team search for something that resembles his counterpart. Mira reports there were no survivors, meaning that Evil Buzz might be gone but Buzz suspects otherwise, despite the others stating it was impossible and Booster saying only Buzz can survive things like that. Unbeknownst to anyone, Evil Buzz has in fact managed to survive by clinging to a piece of debris that allowed him to fly away from the sun.

Trivia[]

  • This episode aired on the same day that Toy Story 2, Zurg's first appearance in the Toy Story franchise, was released.
  • The character labeled "Tech #2" reuses Gil's character model, but is voiced by Max Brooks rather than Stephen Tobolowsky and is working a different field, implying that it is not intended to be Gil.
  • This episode marks the final appearance of Evil Buzz along with Gil.

Errors[]

  • In one shot, Evil Buzz's pants are grey instead of purple.
  • Gravitina's name is listed as "Gravatina" in the credits.
  • In one scene, a fireball explodes around two Star Cruisers, and when they emerge from it, the numbers on the sides are visible - and they both read 42!
